For the first time since 2017, China’s Foreign Minister confirmed the visit to Australia next week, according to reports.

It will be two-day visit and the Wang Yi’s trip arrives at a crucial time in bilateral relations between China and Australia.

 

Previously China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong met in an official capacity in Beijing in 2022.

Friendly gestures with the Albanese government started Beijing removing tariffs on beef, barley, coal, and cotton and also China’s commerce ministry plans to remove tariffs on Australian wines which put in place for close to four years.

China detained Australian journalist Cheng Lei accused of spying, the journalist was released and returned home last year.  

However, Australia and China remain at odds on several major issues, but ties between two countries have been steadily improving.

The visit comes following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent visit to China in November 6, 2023 where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
