In a significant move, British lawmakers have given their approval, with a vote of 313-269, to the government’s plan to send asylum-seekers to Rwanda, despite facing criticism from various quarters.
The bill, known as the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill, aims to address a previous ruling by the UK Supreme Court that deems the plan to send migrants to Rwanda as illegal.
The plan, though costly and controversial, holds significance for Sunak, who sees it as pivotal to fulfilling his promise to "stop the boats" bringing unauthorized migrants across the English Channel.
The bill, however, faces opposition from human rights groups, citing ethical concerns and Rwanda's "poor human rights record".
Sunak defended the bill on social media, stating, "the British people should decide who gets to come to this country."
